What is a cheap, but good quality hotel in San Diego, near the San Diego Convention Center?

I'm going for a conference from Dec 5-9 this year. I've looked into the Comfort Inn Gaslamp and the Ramada Hotel in the Gaslamp district, but I can't find anything cheaper. The Marriott and the Hilton are just a tad bit expensive for me.What is a cheap, but good quality hotel in San Diego, near the San Diego Convention Center?
Holiday Inn by the Bay is usually one of the less expensive places to stay downtown. You'll find more info and links to each hotel at: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/san-di鈥?/a>

It's always a good idea to find out the rates online and then call the hotels to see if they are having any good deals. Often I get the best rates by doing this. What is a cheap, but good quality hotel in San Diego, near the San Diego Convention Center?
The key here is to use the trolley (light rail). There are literally hundreds of hotels that are accessible via the trolley which will take you to the CC from Old Town, Fashion Valley (Hotel Circle), Mission Valley, and beyond. However, it does depend on the size of your conference. If you are attending a really large scale convention (Comicon) then all the hotels in the city will be boosting their rates.

It sounds as if you are most concerned with rate as opposed to location and amenity and are going to be with out auto. I would suggest either Old Town or Hotel Circle to look for hotels. There are quite a few hotels close to the trolley station at Old Town that should be pretty reasonable and yet decent hotels. I can think of La Quinta and the Courtyard off the top of my head. If you are looking for the cheapest hotels, you should look off of Hotel Circle North. The Town %26amp; Country won't be the cheapest but it will be the closest to the Fashion Valley trolley stop. If you go one station further, the Doubletree Mission Valley is directly across the street from the station but it tends to be a higher end hotel.

Enjoy SD!
When price is is your main concern, the Marriott in the gas lamp district of San Diego can be a great alternative to the Marriott next to the convention center. There is also a whole street of restaurants near the gas lamp district, so you'll have plenty of options there. Btw I work with Marriott, so if you have any questions just feel free to ask!
I actually work at the Holiday Inn downtown. It was just remodeled so the rooms are really nice and usually goes for about $129/nt if not cheaper. It is a straight shot to the convention center. Eventhough it's about a mile, it's all down hill. It's only 4 blocks to the trolley that will drop you off right in front of the convention center and you can get an all day pass for $5. It's about $8 in a cab to get there and $6 to get back (because if the one way streets.) There is a courtesy shuttle that goes in a 5 mile radius ';if available';. It does free pick-ups and drop-offs from the airport that would save you $12 each way. It's can be a pain to get a shuttle to go to the convention center but if you tip the driver, he'll go out of his way to take you everyday.
It depends on your definition of ';near';.

I like to stay north of the Gaslamp District, which keeps the price down. It means a 15-20 minute walk to the Convention Center, or a short cab ride. If you're OK with that, then I recommend the Hotel Occidental.

I've stayed there 3 years during July's S.D. Comic-Con (a very busy time) and paid less than $100 a night. Not too many frills - free continental breakfast though - and much cheaper than the big skyscraper hotels downtown.
I HIGHLY reccomend the Best Western at Mission Bay. The address is 2575 Clairemont Drive. It's a short walk to the beach, and only 4 miles from the Convention Center. It's got complimentary breakfast, clean rooms, and friendly service! Fairly inexpensive too.

Try the J Street Inn.

It is 2 blocks from the convention center in the Gaslamp.
