the cheapest? try searching mikuni house in the internet they offer a house for 15,000 or something for a week or so. good accommodation for a big group trying to stay together on a trip. you could also try youth hostels. its good especially okey when you are moving around or on the go. JR rail pass is okey when you have limited time. but its expensive by my standards (^_^)v, if you could stay in japan longer and you wanted to really savor or enjoy going around try the 18 seishun kippu, but its really for the adventurous and agile people... and its available only on some dates and seasons within japan...hope you enjoy japan...(^_^)b
there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely give you the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.
Hi there,

Yes the Japan Railway Pass enable you to unlimited travel around Japan. It's actually the best ways to travel if you plan to visit main attractions in Japan. The JR pass also enable you to have certain discount at cetain hotels. They have 7 days or 14 days pass. My suggesstion is for you to find out about the route of the railway and then plan your visit accordingly. But remember you must purchase the Pass before you leave. There are no Pass sold in Japan. Purchase it at their authorised worldwide sales office These websites might help you. Depending where you are planning to stay, variety of hotels within your budget is available for you. Plan wisely.

Good luck!!
You might want to stay at a Japanese-style ryokan which accommodates foreigners. I stayed with a friend at Sawanoya Ryokan near Ueno Zoo and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. If you book a larger room, your family can all sleep on futan together, just like traditional families do. If you are only traveling around Tokyo, than get day passes. If you want to go to Kyoto or other large cities, you would use a JR Rail Pass for the week.
Look up for the Toyoko Inn Hotel website. This is a hotel chain in Japan and they have hotels located within 5 to 10 minutes walking distance from major train / mass transit stations throughout Japan. Room rates are relatively cheaper and they are clean and tidy.
